Protect yourself from property payment scams
Buying or selling property involves large amounts of money, which makes property transactions a target for scammers.
If you receive bank account details by email, always independently verify them with the recipient before transferring money.
Keep your money safe
Scammers can impersonate lawyers, conveyancers, agents or other people involved in your transaction.
They may use a compromised email account or a convincing fake email to try to redirect your money to their own bank account.
Always call us to verify bank account details before making a payment.
Find our phone number by typing prepared.com.au into your browser or using a trusted source.
Be careful with emails that ask you to make a payment, particularly if the request is unexpected or urgent.
Never rely on an email alone to confirm bank account details.
Don't use links or phone numbers in a suspicious email to verify payment instructions.
Don't transfer money to a new or changed bank account without speaking to us first.
Common warning signs
Scammers can make fraudulent emails and messages look very convincing. Look out for:
You receive an email saying that our bank account details have changed or that payment should be made to a different account.
You're told that payment needs to be made immediately or that something will go wrong if you don't act.
You're asked to make a payment that you weren't expecting or that doesn't match what we've previously discussed.
The email address, wording, links or attachments don't look quite right.
You're asked not to call us or to deal with the payment request without checking with anyone else.
If you're unsure, stop and call us
If something doesn't look right, don't make the payment.
